Weekly Theme Days: Tradition, Creativity & Connection in the High School Senior Year
As part of an effort to promote values like friendship, inclusion, and group identity, our Grade 12 students have been organizing a series of weekly theme days throughout the first trimester. This student-led initiative is supported by our Educational Relations Coordinator, Nathan Shahar, and guided by their tutors, Mr. Alexandre de Mattos and Ms. Juliana Gomes.
Far more than just a fun activity, these theme days have become a meaningful ritual that strengthens peer bonds and celebrates the students’ final year in school. Inspired by a century-old Brazilian tradition that began in universities, the trote has evolved into a symbolic rite of passage in many high schools, blending creativity, collective spirit, and a deep sense of belonging.
Each week, students propose new, inclusive themes that allow them to express themselves while fostering a respectful and welcoming environment for everyone. With creativity and good humor, these activities have brought color, joy, and togetherness to our school hallways.
We deeply value student-driven projects that encourage ethical relationships, a sense of community, and authentic engagement in school life.
Kids 4 visit to the school restaurant
As part of their inquiry into the concept of systems through the lens of the PYP, the Pre-K students visited the school cafeteria to see how different parts work together to create an organized and functional system. Guided by their curiosity and questions, the children observed how food is prepared in the kitchen and how trays and utensils are distributed. They began to understand that each person, the cooks, cafeteria staff, and even the students has a role that contributes to the success of the whole system. This visit supported their development as inquirers and thinkers, helping them make real-world connections to the idea that systems are made up of interdependent parts working together for a purpose.
OBAFOG
In April 14th, Teens and High School students took part in an incredible experience: the rocket launch as part of OBAFOG – Olimpíada Brasileira de Foguetes. This event marked our first official participation, as part of the catalog of academic competitions offered to our students through the Núcleo de Estudos Olímpicos (NEO).
OBAFOG is a hands-on, experimental competition, and our students were able to count on the support of Mr. Anderson and the infrastructure of our makerspace for the construction of their rockets using PET bottles.
On the day of the launch at Parque Tietê Ecológico Barueri, students had the opportunity to test their creations with launches using compressed air propulsion methods (Teens, level 3) or the chemical reaction between vinegar (acetic acid) and baking soda (High School, level 4).
It was incredibly moving to witness the excitement of our students. Projects like this encourage creativity, put knowledge into practice, and promote a spirit of overcoming challenges!
Congratulations to our students!
Easter Action – CCCA
At our school, one of the great differentials is the Ethical Coexistence, Science of Well-Being and Self-Realization program. In it, our students are invited to rethink the way we treat others and develop strategies for living with more ethics, empathy and purpose.
We believe that these values are strengthened when put into practice. It was in this spirit that, once again, our school mobilized for a beautiful act of solidarity.
We organized a campaign to help two institutions: Amigo Mortadela and CCCA. Our goal was a bold one: to collect 600 Easter eggs and, with the involvement of the whole school community, we managed to reach that target!
A group of T8 girls were invited to represent our school in the delivery to the CCCA. They stood out for their commitment to the campaign, collecting over 200 eggs together! More than just donations, they brought love, empathy, attentive listening and hospitality, values that we teach and experience on a daily basis at our school.
Raquel and Letícia, two of the students who took part in the delivery, shared what it was like to live this transformative experience:
“At first we were nervous, because we were afraid we wouldn’t hit the target. We had to work as a group and have a lot of resilience. We went through ups and downs, but we remained resilient. Some of the eggs we bought online arrived in smaller sizes, which made us even more apprehensive. But on the day of delivery, everything went well, we beat and exceeded the target. And during the delivery, it was a moment when we disconnected from the world and focused only on them.”
When asked about the importance of the action, the students reflected:
“It was a learning moment. We were able to see other realities that seemed so far away, but were so close. We learned to be more grateful and to value what we have. Sometimes we don’t value what we have, but there are people who have less.”
And Leticia concludes:
“Delivering the eggs to the children was a unique moment that will remain in our hearts forever.”
Our purpose is to love in order to transform lives. And it is through actions like this that we continue to form human beings who are aware, supportive and ready to make a difference.
